Mileage Reimbursement for VA Appointments
Reimbursement of Travel Costs Certain veterans may be provided special mode travel (e.g. wheelchair van, ambulance) or reimbursed for travel costs when traveling for approved VA medical care. Reimbursement is paid at 41.5 cents per mile and is subject to a deductible of $3 for each one-way trip and $6 for a round trip; with a maximum deductible of $18 or the amount after six one-way trips (whichever occurs first) per calendar month. Two exceptions to the deductible are travel in relation to a VA compensation or pension examination and travel requiring a special mode of transportation. The deductibles may be waived when their imposition would cause a severe financial hardship. Eligibility: The following are eligible for VA travel: 1. Veterans whose service-connected disabilities are rated 30 percent or more. 2. Veterans traveling for treatment of service-connected conditions. 3. Veterans who receive a VA pension. 4. Veterans traveling for scheduled compensation or pension examinations. 5. Maximum annual VA pension rate. 6. Certain veterans in certain emergency situations. 7. Veterans whose medical condition requires a special mode of transportation, if they are unable to defray the costs and travel is pre-authorized. Advance authorization is not required in an emergency if a delay would be hazardous to life or health. 8. Certain non-veterans when related to care of a veteran (attendants & donors).
Honorary Diplomas For Veterans
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of Missouri, along with the Missouri Veterans Commission, has implemented a program known as "Operation Recognition", which was established in 2001 by the General Assembly. Through this program, the state will award honorary high school diplomas to eligible Missouri veterans who dropped out of school to serve in the Armed Forces. An eligible applicant would include World War II, Korean War, Vietnam or other Veterans who did not finish high school, or who did finish but had left to serve their country before the graduation ceremony. The State Department of Education will produce the actual diploma, however, local school districts will assist the Department in the presentation of these awards.
The Missouri Veterans Commission is accepting applications from Missouri Veterans who are interested in the honorary diploma. All veterans who believe they qualify must contact the Veterans Commission at 1-573-751-3487 for an application.
Online Veteran Service Office Resources:
Veteran Service Offices are a resource created to assist servicemembers and veterans in applying for and getting the VA benefits they need and deserve. Veteran Service Offices, which are normally located at VA Regional Offices, VA Hospitals and Clinics, are operated by one of many military veterans service organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), or The Purple Heart Association. The counselors who work in these offices are referred to as either Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) or District Service Officers (DSOs). These counselors are committed to assisting you with the process of getting enrolled in the VA, filing claims, appeals and pursuing your hard-earned benefits and compensation. In the past it has been difficult for veterans to find their local VSO, however thanks to the VFW there is a new online resource to assist veterans who need the type of assistance only a truly dedicated VSO can provide. To find a VSO near you go to V.F.W. Service Officers and click on the resources link. To read more about the valuable services VSOs provide click here.
MISSOURI WORLD WAR II VETERANS' AWARD RECOGNITION MEDAL AND MEDALLION
Governor Bob Holden provided funding after the state legislature and Governor Mel Carnahan established that "Every Veteran who honorably served in the United States military [during World War II] shall be entitled to receive a medallion, medal and a certificate of appreciation pursuant to the conditions established in [Senate Bill No. 961]," in 2000.
Governor Bob Holden and the Missouri General Assembly then expanded the program under new legislation; House Bills 1398 and 1399 in 2002, and then again in 2003 with Senate Bill 219. Veterans who were legal residents of Missouri on August 28, 2000, and served on active duty any time during the period of December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 are eligible to receive the award. Under the most recent legislation the spouse or the eldest living survivor of WWII Veterans may apply on behalf of deceased veterans.
In addition to the Missouri World War II Veterans Award Recognition medal and medallion, veterans who participated in the "D-Day" invasion of Europe between the dates of June 6, 1944 to August 31, 1944 will receive a replica of the 50th anniversary JUBILEE OF LIBERTY MEDAL.
The Jubilee of Liberty was originally produced by the Government of France and was first awarded in 1994.
